BMC Trailblazer Lecture by Carsten Janke: The Tubulin Code – How Basic Molecular Tuning Knobs Control Complex Physiological Functions

Carsten Janke is a cell biologist known for his pioneering work on microtubule biology and, in particular, for establishing the fundamental concept of the “tubulin code”. His work has shown how tubulin isotypes and post-translational modifications of tubulin can act as molecular tuning knobs that regulate microtubule properties and thereby influence complex cellular functions.

Over the past two decades, Carsten and his laboratory have made seminal contributions to our understanding of how tubulin modifications are generated, interpreted and translated into changes in microtubule behaviour. His research covers a broad range of topics, including microtubule dynamics, intracellular transport, neuronal function, cilia and the molecular mechanisms underlying tubulin-related diseases.
